The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) crashed out of the Copa América in disappointing fashion,
losing 1-0 to Uruguay on Monday night. This defeat intensifies calls for Gregg Berhalter’s removal as head coach, especially considering the upcoming 2026 World Cup held on home soil.
A Questionable Goal Sinks USMNT Hopes
Uruguay’s only goal came in the 66th minute from a controversial free-kick. While Matt Turner made a valiant save on the initial header, the rebound fell to Mathías Olivera who tapped it in. Although replays hinted at an offside position, the goal stood after a VAR review.
Earlier in the day, a glimmer of hope emerged for the USMNT when Bolivia tied Panama in a simultaneous match. However, Panama ultimately secured the second Group C spot with a 3-1 victory.

Wasted Potential Frustrates Fans and Pundits
Berhalter fielded a team entirely composed of players from European clubs, aiming to showcase improvement since the 2022 World Cup.
Despite an opening victory against Bolivia, their performance dipped, culminating in an upset loss to Panama.
“Where’s the progress?” questioned former USMNT captain Clint Dempsey. “This is supposed to be a golden generation, and it feels like we’re squandering it.”
Berhalter, recently given a contract extension through the 2026 World Cup, faced criticism despite fielding stars like Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Tyler Adams. The team failed to match their 2016 Copa América performance, where they reached the semi-finals.
Berhalter acknowledged the team’s shortcomings, stating, “We should’ve done better. We’ll analyze what went wrong, but right now, it’s incredibly frustrating.”
A Physical Match with Questionable Calls
Uruguay, under temporary management due to a coaching suspension, opted for a physical style of play. Folarin Balogun, who previously impressed with two goals, faced relentless challenges,
ultimately leaving with a hip injury.
The officiating also left much to be desired. Peruvian referee Kevin Ortega made several head-scratching decisions, including a yellow card that never materialized and a delayed whistle on a clear handball by Uruguay. “Those are amateur mistakes,” commented defender Antonee Robinson.
Uruguay stepped up the pressure in the second half, forcing the US into a desperate scramble for an equalizer. While they created chances, they ultimately fell short of the two goals needed to advance.
This defeat adds pressure to Berhalter’s position. With the 2026 World Cup looming, fans and pundits alike will be demanding answers and a clear path forward for the USMNT.
