Ecuador’s Copa America journey has come to an abrupt end, and so has coach Felix Sanchez’s tenure with the national team. The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) relieved Sanchez of his duties following a penalty shootout defeat to Argentina in the quarter-finals.
Close But Not Enough Against Argentina
Despite a valiant effort, Ecuador fell short against the defending champions. Lionel Messi missed a penalty for Argentina, but goalkeeper Emi Martinez rose to the occasion, saving Ecuador’s first two attempts from the spot. The match finished 1-1 after goals from Lisandro Martinez (Argentina) and Kevin Rodriguez (Ecuador). Earlier, Ecuador captain Enner Valencia missed a penalty of their own.

Shaky Start, Promising Future?
Ecuador’s path to the knockout stages wasn’t smooth sailing. They started the tournament with a disappointing 2-1 loss to Venezuela and were fortunate to benefit from a reversed penalty call in their final group game against Mexico.
Sanchez Departs Despite Long-Term Deal
This exit marks the end of Sanchez’s reign, despite signing a four-year contract in March 2023. The 48-year-old coach, who previously led Qatar to their first Asian Cup title in 2019, expressed his disappointment but remained optimistic about the team’s future.
“We made it to the knockout rounds,” Sanchez stated. “I believe the players deserve credit. We have a young team, and while the results may seem unfair, I trust in this group’s potential.”
