Astros Star Will See Specialist After Renewed Pain

Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez has encountered another hurdle in his recovery from a broken right hand, prompting the team to pause his return and send him for further medical evaluation.

Alvarez reported pain on Tuesday upon arriving at the Astros’ spring training facility in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he had completed a workout the previous day. He had also taken batting practice on Saturday at Daikin Park.

Team Takes Cautious Approach Amid Ongoing Soreness

Astros general manager Dana Brown addressed the media before the team’s game in Colorado, stating that Alvarez will be shut down until he can be assessed by a specialist.

“It’s a tough time going through this with Yordan,” Brown explained. “We’re not going to try to push it or force him through anything. We’re just going to allow him to heal and get more answers as to what steps we take next.”

Alvarez, 28, has been out of action for nearly two months. While his injury was originally diagnosed as a muscle strain, additional imaging in late May revealed a small fracture after he reported renewed discomfort while hitting.

Timetable for Return Now Uncertain

The Astros had been optimistic about Alvarez potentially returning to action during their upcoming series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, the latest flare-up has cast doubt on that timeline.

“We felt like he was close because he had felt so good of late,” Brown added. “But this is certainly news that we didn’t want.”

The left-handed slugger has been a crucial offensive asset for Houston, recording 31 or more home runs in each of the past four seasons. His absence continues to impact the Astros’ lineup depth and power production.

Astros Face Additional Injury Setbacks

In other roster news, Houston officially placed shortstop Jeremy Peña on the 10-day injured list with a fractured rib. In response, the club recalled infielder Shay Whitcomb from Triple-A Sugar Land to fill the roster gap.

As injuries mount, the Astros will need to navigate the next stretch of the season without two key starters, adding pressure to the lineup and infield depth.
