Denver Expects Valanciunas to Fulfill NBA Contract
The Denver Nuggets made a key offseason move by acquiring Jonas Valanciunas, solidifying their bench with one of the strongest backup centers of the Nikola Jokic era. However, the situation took a twist when reports surfaced that Valanciunas expressed interest in returning to Europe, specifically joining Greek powerhouse Panathinaikos.
Valanciunas reportedly engaged in discussions with Panathinaikos, who were prepared to offer him a three-year, $13 million deal—potentially making him one of Europe’s highest-paid basketball players. Yet, despite the mutual interest, Valanciunas remains under contract with the Nuggets for two years and $20.4 million. According to FIBA regulations, players under contract cannot unilaterally switch teams without consent from their current franchise.
FIBA Rules Block Potential European Move
Denver has made its stance clear. According to a report by ESPN’s Shams Charania, the organization has informed Valanciunas’ representatives that it expects him to honor his contract. Unless the Nuggets agree to a buyout and release him from his obligations, Valanciunas is bound to stay in Denver. The franchise’s commitment appears firm, especially considering its championship aspirations for the upcoming season.
The only way Valanciunas could legally sign with a European team would be through a formal buyout agreement with the Nuggets. This would involve Valanciunas forfeiting a significant portion—if not all—of his remaining salary. Only then could FIBA issue the necessary letter of clearance to authorize the international transfer.
Nuggets View Valanciunas as Crucial Asset
From Denver’s perspective, letting Valanciunas go doesn’t align with its competitive goals. The team has struggled for years during minutes when Jokic rests. Valanciunas offers an ideal solution with his interior presence and offensive versatility. His ability to operate in handoff plays and midrange areas allows the Nuggets to maintain their core offensive identity, even in Jokic’s absence.
Paired with role players like Bruce Brown, Peyton Watson, and rising talent Julian Strawther, Valanciunas enhances Denver’s rotation depth. The franchise is building a well-rounded roster to support another championship run, and a sudden departure by Valanciunas would create a significant void.
Future Options Remain Open, But Not Immediate
Although a buyout might be considered in the future, possibly after the 2025 season, Denver’s short-term plans clearly include Valanciunas. For now, the door to Europe is firmly closed unless Denver chooses to open it—something that, by all signs, they are unwilling to do.
