Padres Star Joins Elite MLB Company
San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado recorded his 2,000th career hit on Monday night during a matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The milestone came in the fourth inning when Machado hit a sharp single off starter Zac Gallen, deflecting off shortstop Geraldo Perdomo’s glove.
The historic moment was met with a standing ovation from the Petco Park crowd, celebrating a fan favorite who has been a cornerstone of the Padres since signing with the team in 2019. Earlier in the game, Machado had singled to left field for his 1,999th hit.
One of the Few to Reach 2,000 Hits Before 33
With this accomplishment, Machado becomes the fifth active MLB player and the 297th player in league history to reach 2,000 career hits. Even more impressively, he’s one of just 12 players in history to reach both 350 home runs and 2,000 hits before turning 33.
Career Overview Across Three Teams
Machado began his professional career with the Baltimore Orioles in 2012. During his time in Baltimore, he recorded 977 hits before being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 18, 2018. He then tallied 73 hits with the Dodgers before joining the Padres as a free agent in February 2019.
Since arriving in San Diego, Machado has added 950 hits to his career total, ranking him fifth in franchise history. Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn leads the Padres’ all-time hit list with 3,141 over a 20-year career.
All-Star Recognition Highlights Career Year
This year, Machado was selected as the starting third baseman for the National League in the All-Star Game, adding another accolade to a stellar season. His consistent performance and leadership have made him a vital part of the Padres’ lineup and a respected figure across the league.
