Nevada Gaming Commission Reinstates Sandy Seda’s Eligibility

Sandy Seda’s eligibility for gaming work is reinstated as the Nevada Gaming Commission overturns his suspension in a 3-2 vote.
Nevada Gaming Commission Reinstates Sandy Seda’s Eligibility

The Nevada Gaming Commission has overturned the suspension of Sandy Seda’s gaming registration, allowing the former Mandalay Bay security chief to reapply for work in the industry.

Narrow Vote Reverses Suspension

In a close 3-2 decision, the commission ruled in Seda’s favor after he challenged the initial suspension imposed by the Nevada Gaming Control Board. The board had revoked his registration due to allegations of spousal abuse, which Seda denied.

During a 35-minute hearing, Seda argued that the claims against him were unproven. Although he later pled guilty to disturbing the peace in November, this charge did not meet the threshold of a felony, gross misdemeanor, or crime of moral turpitude. Without his gaming registration, Seda was forced out of the industry, but the latest ruling gives him a path back.

Allegations and Legal Defense

Seda, a former Marine and ex-police chief at UNLV and the College of Southern Nevada, received strong support from his attorney, Michael Becker. Becker emphasized that Seda’s suspension was based on accusations rather than a legal conviction. He pointed out that other licensed professionals, such as doctors and lawyers, are not typically barred from their industries under similar circumstances.

“This was the lowest point for Mr. Seda,” Becker stated. “His marriage ended, and he was in a toxic relationship that led to charges, but the only official mark on his record is disturbing the peace.”

Seda maintained his innocence, insisting, “I’ve never touched her. I know better than that. I’m a good man and a good father.”

Divided Opinions on the Case

The commission’s majority—Rosa Solis-Rainey, Brian Krolicki, and George Markantonis—agreed there was not enough evidence to justify keeping Seda out of the industry. Krolicki noted Seda’s extensive service record, stating, “It was one bad hour during one afternoon.”

However, retired judges Jennifer Togliatti and Abbi Silver dissented, arguing that allegations of domestic violence should not be dismissed lightly. Togliatti highlighted the complexity of such cases, noting that victims sometimes avoid legal action due to personal or financial concerns. She pointed to documented bruises on Seda’s ex-wife and stated, “This isn’t criminal court, and it doesn’t need to be reasonable doubt.”

Seda and his ex-wife, a civilian employee of the Metropolitan Police Department, share custody of their two teenage children.

This decision follows a recent ruling by the Nevada Gaming Commission to pursue stricter penalties against a former Resorts World Las Vegas agent accused of enabling her husband’s illegal gambling and money laundering activities.
