Las Vegas Strip Revenue Slumps Amid Fewer Visitors

Las Vegas Strip revenue declined for a fourth month as May visitor numbers dropped, hitting casinos and hotels across the city hard.
Las Vegas Strip Revenue Slumps Amid Fewer Visitors

Tourism Drop Fuels Gaming Industry Decline

Las Vegas continues to feel the impact of a slowdown in tourism, as May marked the fourth consecutive month of falling gaming revenue. Casinos along the Strip reported a combined gambling win of $713.7 million, reflecting a 3.9% year-over-year drop and the lowest total for May since 2021, when the industry was still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Statewide, Nevada’s casino revenue also declined, dropping 2.2% to $1.29 billion. These figures, reported by the Nevada Gaming Control Board, reflect growing financial caution among consumers and fewer visitors to the state’s most iconic entertainment corridor.

Fewer Tourists, Lower Spending

According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the city welcomed approximately 3.41 million tourists in May 2025—a 6.5% decline from the same month last year. This downturn was driven by reduced air and road travel. Harry Reid International Airport saw a 3.9% decrease in passenger traffic, while vehicle counts at the California-Nevada border dropped 5%.

While tourism in general showed weakness, convention attendance provided a bright spot. The number of convention attendees rose 10.7%, fueled by events such as the Bitcoin Conference, LightFair International, and the NAMA Show. These gatherings helped mitigate some of the losses from the leisure travel segment.

Mid-Tier Casinos Hit Hardest

The slump in tourism was felt unevenly across the Strip’s gaming venues. Mid-range casinos experienced the steepest losses. Properties that typically generate between $12 million and $36 million per month saw their revenue decline by more than 50%. In contrast, high-end resorts such as Wynn and Bellagio weathered the dip with only minor setbacks.

The breakdown of gaming performance reveals slot machines as a major source of the decline. Slot revenue on the Strip dropped 5.4% to $381.2 million, due to both fewer active players and lower hold percentages. Table games excluding baccarat brought in $222.6 million—a 2.4% increase—while baccarat itself posted a 10% drop in revenue, also accompanied by a 10% decline in betting volume.

Room Rates and Occupancy Trends

Hotels across the Strip saw occupancy rates fall to 85.3%, with average daily room prices dipping to $198.20 from $202.59 in May 2024. Downtown Las Vegas was hit hardest, with room rates plummeting 12.4% to an average of $109.39.

Strong Performance Beyond the Strip

While the Strip struggled, smaller Nevada markets posted gains. Laughlin reported a 17% increase in gaming win, while Mesquite rose 9.7%. Northern Nevada towns such as Sparks also contributed positively, with gaming revenue climbing nearly 12%.

Market Revenue Change (YoY) Notes
Las Vegas Strip -3.9% Lowest May revenue since 2021
Laughlin +17% Strongest performer statewide
Mesquite +9.7% Consistent regional growth
Sparks +12% Northern Nevada strength
Downtown Las Vegas -12.4% (room rates) Biggest decline in hotel pricing

Outlook for the Summer Season

Industry analysts caution that the summer months could remain challenging for the Las Vegas Strip. Although business conventions may continue to offer modest support, overall consumer interest appears to be waning. Analysts suggest that any significant rebound may have to wait until late in the year, as macroeconomic pressures and shifting tourism habits continue to weigh on the industry.
