Mobile Gambling Drives Spike in Helpline Calls
The widespread adoption of mobile sports betting in New York has led to a surge in gambling addiction, particularly among young adults. The state’s gambling helpline reports that online betting is now the leading reason for calls.
Experts Warn of Public Health Risk
Although a bill to legalize full-scale online casino apps did not pass this year, addiction experts stress the urgency of addressing gambling among youth. New York’s Office of Addiction Services and Supports noted the most significant spike in treatment demand occurred in 2021–22, shortly after mobile betting became legal in January 2022.
A Siena College survey found that 22% of Americans—and nearly half of men aged 18 to 49—have active mobile betting accounts. Jim Maney, director of the New York Council on Problem Gambling, expressed concern that young users are being conditioned to gamble from an early age.
Young Adults: Prime Targets for Online Betting
Stephen Shapiro from the University of South Carolina explains that young adults are especially vulnerable due to their tech-savviness, high risk tolerance, and limited financial knowledge. App-based micro-betting formats and pervasive advertising from platforms like FanDuel and DraftKings further contribute to their engagement.
Dr. Christopher Tuell from the Lindner Center of HOPE highlights the neurological risk, noting that young brains are especially responsive to dopamine—the brain chemical linked to addiction—making self-control more difficult.
Calls for More Prevention and Education
Governor Kathy Hochul has committed $6 million of the state’s nearly $30 billion gambling tax revenue to fund education and treatment. Medicaid now covers gambling disorder treatment as well. Still, critics like Maney argue these efforts are not enough.
He suggests that for every dollar spent promoting gambling, an equal amount should be allocated to counter-campaigns focused on awareness and prevention. Without substantial educational outreach, experts fear the problem will escalate.
