Marketing Missteps Lead to Thousands of Customer Refunds
DraftKings has agreed to pay more than $3 million in refunds to over 7,000 users in Connecticut following a state-led investigation into the company’s promotional practices. The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) reviewed bonus and deposit match offers made between October 19, 2021, and January 4, 2023, and found that key terms and conditions were not clearly disclosed to customers.
Bonus Offers Lacked Transparency
The DCP’s investigation revealed that many users misunderstood or were not made aware of the fine print tied to promotional offers. These included deposit match bonuses and other incentives that required specific betting thresholds to qualify for rewards.
In response, DraftKings has committed to issuing refunds to affected players and providing improved transparency in its future marketing efforts. The operator will also implement mandatory annual training for its marketing and advertising teams operating in Connecticut.
Additional Measures and Penalties
Beyond customer reimbursements, DraftKings has agreed to several compliance measures to prevent future issues. These include:
| Commitment | Description |
|---|---|
| Annual Staff Training | Required for Connecticut marketing personnel to ensure compliance with promotional regulations. |
| Educational Resources | Expanded materials to help customers understand bonuses and responsible gaming practices. |
| Penalty Payment | $50,000 paid to support customer protection, education, and enforcement initiatives. |
Officials Emphasize Consumer Protection
DCP Commissioner Bryan T. Cafferelli praised the outcome, emphasizing that it ensures consumer compensation while reinforcing fair gaming practices. Gaming Division Director Kris Gilman echoed the sentiment, stressing the importance of transparent advertising in the online gambling sector.
DraftKings will contact affected users within the next two months, with refunds issued to active accounts where applicable. The DCP also warned residents to remain vigilant against scammers who may impersonate DraftKings representatives to steal sensitive information.
Support Remains Available for Players
Connecticut residents with concerns about promotional practices are encouraged to contact the DCP’s Gaming Division. Those seeking help for gambling-related issues can access support through the Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling and other state-supported services.
