The Chicken Ranch Tribe of Me-Wuk Indians in California has launched a unique solution, Playbawk, to cater to the growing demand for sports betting in the state. While voters rejected the legalization of tribal sports betting in 2022, Playbawk utilizes a loophole by being classified as a Class II gaming product, circumventing the need for state authorization.
Key Points of Playbawk:
- Class II Bingo-Based Concept: Playbawk is not considered Class III gambling, which requires state approval, because it doesn’t directly involve wagering on the outcome of sporting events. Instead, it utilizes a bingo-based format.
- Parlay Pick’em Game: Players choose individual athlete performances on a tic-tac-toe board, predicting which athlete will outperform the designated handicap. Filling more cells on the board leads to bigger rewards.
- Mobile App with Reservation Restriction: Designed for mobile devices, Playbawk can currently only be used on the tribe’s reservation in northern California.
Collaboration and Innovation:
Developed in partnership with Vetnos, a company specializing in Class II gaming solutions, Playbawk utilizes their existing PlaySqor product framework. This collaboration allows the tribe to offer a sports-themed wagering experience while adhering to legal classifications.
Financial and Tribal Benefits:
- No Revenue Sharing with the State: As a Class II product, the tribe retains all revenue generated from Playbawk, unlike Class III options that involve sharing with the state.
- Potential for Expansion: Tribe Chairman Lloyd Mathieson envisions expanding Playbawk within California, potentially benefiting other tribes in the state.
A Solution and a Hope:
Mathieson views Playbawk as a way to address the demand for sports betting while offering a legal alternative for Californians following the rejection of the tribal sports betting initiative. He also praises Vetnos for their innovative solutions, suggesting they offer a path forward for tribes seeking similar options.
