Nationals Rookie Adds Firepower to All-Star Showcase
Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood has officially committed to the 2025 Home Run Derby, becoming the third confirmed participant in this year’s competition. The event is scheduled for July 14 at Truist Park in Atlanta, taking place the night before the MLB All-Star Game.
Wood joins Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr. and Seattle Mariners slugger Cal Raleigh, who currently leads the league with 33 home runs. All eyes will be on the trio as they compete for the Derby crown in front of a national audience.
A Historic Night for Wood
The 22-year-old rookie made headlines Thursday night after going 5-for-5 with his 23rd home run of the season during the Nationals’ 11-7 victory over the Detroit Tigers. That performance helped cement his place in the Derby and showcased the kind of raw power fans can expect to see.
Wood is no stranger to tape-measure blasts. He has hit 12 homers clocked at over 110 mph this season—second only to Shohei Ohtani—and has launched four home runs beyond the 445-foot mark. His inclusion in the Derby lineup marks a new milestone for the Nationals franchise, as he becomes the third player in team history to take part, following Juan Soto (2022) and Bryce Harper (2013 and 2018).
A Rising Star with Something to Prove
Speaking about his selection, Wood expressed gratitude and excitement: “It’s definitely special. Not a lot of guys get to do this, so I’m honored and excited to be a part of it.”
Acquired by Washington in the 2022 trade that sent Juan Soto to the San Diego Padres, Wood has rapidly become a fan favorite. His blend of speed, power, and poise at the plate has put him at the forefront of the Nationals’ rebuilding efforts and made him one of the most talked-about young players in the league.
Truist Park Set for a Showdown
This year’s Derby promises to deliver a clash of power hitters with different styles and motivations. While Raleigh brings veteran pop and Acuña returns as a fan favorite in his home stadium, Wood arrives with momentum and youthful energy. With the full field yet to be finalized, anticipation continues to build for what could be one of the most exciting Home Run Derbies in recent memory.
