NCAA Considers Letting Athletes Bet on Pro Sports

The NCAA may soon allow college athletes to bet on pro sports, while keeping restrictions on college games and insider info sharing.
NCAA Considers Letting Athletes Bet on Pro Sports

Policy Shift Reflects Changing Legal Landscape

The NCAA is moving toward a major policy update that could allow college athletes and staff to legally bet on professional sports. This would mark a significant shift in its longstanding restrictions, reflecting the broader legalization of sports betting across the United States.

The Division I Council initiated the process on June 24 by proposing changes to current rules. If approved in the Council’s follow-up session on June 25, the measure would still require the endorsement of Division II and III governing bodies and a final vote scheduled for October.

Loosening Restrictions on Pro Sports Betting

Under the proposed rule, athletes and staff would be permitted to wager on professional sporting events where betting is legal. However, betting on college games would remain strictly prohibited. The NCAA also plans to maintain its stance against the sharing of insider information and will continue banning gambling advertisements from championship events.

Support for revising outdated regulations has been growing. In April, the Division III Management Council supported the concept, and the Division I Board of Directors voted 21-1 to push for new legislation. Leaders within the organization are calling for more nuanced rules in line with today’s legal and technological realities.

Josh Whitman, chair of the Division I Council and Illinois athletic director, emphasized that existing rules were created when sports betting was largely illegal nationwide. Given the expansion to 38 states and D.C., he believes the time has come for a more pragmatic approach.

Focus on Education and Harm Reduction

Student-athlete wellness remains central to the NCAA’s approach. As the proposal advances, leaders are also exploring safe harbor provisions for athletes who admit to gambling and seek assistance. NCAA Chief Medical Officer Dr. Deena Casiero noted that allowing some forms of regulated betting could improve harm-reduction efforts by moving away from abstinence-only policies.

College Sports Wagering Remains Off Limits

Despite the potential changes, the NCAA remains firm on banning college sports wagering. This follows incidents like the 2023 betting scandal involving 25 athletes from Iowa and Iowa State, some of whom were caught placing bets on college games.

Coaches’ contracts in many programs already include strict anti-gambling terms. At Alabama, head coach Kalen DeBoer is contractually barred from betting or encouraging others to do so.

Meanwhile, legislative efforts to curb college sports betting continue. In June, New Jersey’s Senate committee advanced a bill to ban player-specific prop bets in collegiate competitions.

If enacted, the NCAA’s revised stance could open a new chapter in how college athletics interacts with the legal betting world—acknowledging its reality while drawing clear lines to protect the integrity of college sports.
