DraftKings Defends Lottery Couriers Amid Legitimacy Debate

DraftKings is pushing back against criticism of lottery courier services after concerns arose regarding a recent $83.5 million Lotto Texas jackpot. The winning ticket, sold at Winners Corner TX LLC, was purchased through Jackpocket, a lottery courier service owned by DraftKings. While the winner remains anonymous, some residents have questioned the legitimacy of the service.

Skepticism over lottery couriers intensified in 2023 when a European lottery syndicate manipulated the system to secure a $95 million jackpot by purchasing 25.8 million tickets—enough to guarantee a win. This incident fueled ongoing debates over the role of couriers in Texas’ lottery system.

Last week, Dawn Nettles, founder of LottoReport.com, filed a class-action lawsuit accusing former Texas Lottery CEO Gary Grief of enabling a “criminal conspiracy” by supporting these services. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has also expressed concerns, questioning their legality and vowing to introduce a bill to regulate or ban them.

Lottery courier services like Jackpocket allow customers to select numbers via an app. The service then purchases the tickets from licensed retailers, scans them, and returns them to the buyer. Critics argue this process raises concerns over transparency and fairness.

Peter Sullivan, Senior Vice President of Lottery at DraftKings, refuted claims that couriers manipulate the system. He clarified that Jackpocket does not buy tickets for itself but acts as an intermediary for verified customers. DraftKings, which acquired Jackpocket for $750 million last year, insists the service is both legal and convenient.

"We are trying to create a more convenient way for customers inside the state of Texas to play the game they already know and love in a trustworthy and mobile-based manner."

Despite the controversy, lottery couriers remain operational in Texas. With another legislative battle looming, the debate over their future is far from over.
