Uruguay kicked off their Copa América campaign with a dominant 3-1 victory over Panama on Sunday night.
This win sets them on a path to potentially claim a record-extending 16th title in the prestigious South American tournament.
Araújo Opens the Scoring with a Beauty
Maximiliano Araújo, a rising star for Uruguay, wasted no time getting his team on the board. In the 16th minute, he received a pass from Matías Viña, turned his defender, and unleashed a curling left-footed shot that beat the Panamanian goalkeeper for his second international goal.
Late Goals Seal the Deal for Uruguay
Darwin Núñez doubled the lead in the 85th minute after a Panamanian turnover in midfield. Nicolás de la Cruz sent a long ball to Araújo, whose header deflected off a defender and fell perfectly for Núñez to volley home his 12th goal in 24 international appearances.
Viña capped off the scoring in the first minute of stoppage time with a powerful header from a de la Cruz free kick, marking his first international goal in emphatic fashion.
Panama Gets Consolation Goal
Panama managed to pull one back in the dying moments of the match. Michael Amir Murillo weaved past a defender and slotted the ball past the Uruguayan goalkeeper for a late consolation goal.
Uruguay in Transition but Showing Promise
This victory highlights the potential of Uruguay’s young squad, which is undergoing a rebuilding phase under coach Marcelo Bielsa. Despite the recent retirements of veterans Edinson Cavani and Diego Godín, the team has shown flashes of brilliance, defeating Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico in recent matches.
Looking Ahead
Uruguay will next face Bolivia on Thursday, while Panama will take on the USMNT, who won their opening game against Bolivia 2-0. The top two teams from the group stage will advance to the quarter-finals.
With Luis Suárez, Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer, sidelined for this match, the team has shown they can still be a force to be reckoned with. This win sets the stage for an exciting Copa América campaign for Uruguay as they chase their historic 16th title.
